These lessons were planned and taught as a soil subunit a 7th grade forest ecology unit/study. The full unit plan "Who or what makes up our forest?" can be seen by clicking here. The introductory activity "The dirt on our soil" uses both constructivism and inquiry, allowing students to interact with soils and the idea of classification and differences in soil, guided by the challenge, "Which group can classify their soils in into the most categories?" This lesson was followed with two days of differentiated soil stations in which students explored biotic and abiotic aspects of soil, culminating with: "Are soils biotic or abiotic? State the evidence for your answer."
